The engagement in the Masculinities in Commercial Imagery gallery takes place mainly through the explicit promotion of products and advertisements directed to Paratus’ masculine readership. There is an evident shift in advertising from overly stylised and neutral black-and-white adverts from the 1970s, to eye-catching and colourful commercial imagery in the 1980s. This section features iconic advertisements of the 1980s: The Volkswagen Citi Golf ‘Mondrian-inspired’ commercial from 1984, and the recurring advertisement for Klipdrift Brandy from 1982.
