The work of military chaplains in the SADF runs as a strong theme in reinforcing the Christian Calvinist religious values of the National Party government. The imagery from the 1980s, highlights the personal experiences of soldiers and chaplains, who offered testimonials about how their Christian faith has helped them to remain motivated for the cause.
While the imagery from the mid to late 1970s shows the Chaplain General J. A. Van Zyl, as the primary figurehead in representing the work of SADF military chaplains. Notably, the imagery emphasizes on a non-denominational approach. This was designed to allow for soldiers to receive ministry in accordance to their personal denominational beliefs and teachings.
