This gallery includes images that point to the representation of the roles and responsibilities which were expected of white South African men and women, as well as the constructions of the ‘ideal’ SADF soldier.

We will explore several subthemes: masculine ideals in military and combat imagery, the implicit and explicit portrayal of masculinities through commercial and advertising media, and the careful ways in which the roles for women were outlined in the context of the home front and the SADF.
